The Kiel Canal is a 98 Km long freshwater canal.  Finished in 1895, it links the North Sea at Brunsbüttel to the Baltic Sea at Kiel-Holtenau.  The locks at Brunsbüttel connect the canal to the River Elbe estuary and thence to the North Sea.
