The city of Ålesund, the commercial and industrial capital of the Møre and Romsdal district, was devastated by a fire in 1904 which left 10,000 people homeless.  As a result of the rebuilding the city does not look like any other Norwegian town as there are no wooden clapboard buildings clustering around its harbour side.  Instead the city is teeming with art nouveau architecture and design.
